NEW! We are delighted to be visiting Dee and Hamish Boyd’s garden for the first time.
The garden is 1.3 acres and was once the local primary and junior school. The house still exists but the large attached school was knocked down in the 1960s, much of the rubble being left on site and covered with a thin layer of soil. Also in the lower back part of the garden was a row of miner’s cottages, and much of this ground is also full of rubble on top of heavy clay. Dee and Hamish are both keen gardeners and asked about the soil when they bought the property and were told it was good, although there was little evidence of any gardening being done. Digging is with a pickaxe and to date have had approximately 85 ton of topsoil, 30 ton of recycled compost and 20 ton of manure delivered and hand barrowed around the garden. There is a wildlife pond and a fish pond, a bog area, tropical area, raised beds and a gravelled area, a large polytunnel and veg patch.
The garden is an eclectic mix as both Hamish and Dee have different favourites in plants, more tropical for Hamish and cottage garden/ grasses for Dee. It is a labour of love and ongoing development.
Please bring a plant for the plant stall, and a donation for the tea and cakes; any monies raised will go to the Huntington’s Disease Association.
Unfortunately there is no parking at the property, passengers can be dropped at the gate. Please wear sensible footwear, not suitable for wheelchairs. Full address and parking details will be sent to members.
